"Just Following Orders": The Short-Term Paycheck That Costs Our Future

By Vincent Cordova

"Just following orders" is one of the oldest shields used to avoid moral responsibility.

In modern form, it appears when people accept harmful systems because the paycheck feels immediate and necessary.

But a salary cannot justify policies that erode rights, dignity, and long-term stability for the same families those salaries are meant to protect.

When institutions treat people as units of extraction, ordinary workers are pressured into enforcing structures that ultimately harm their own communities.

History is clear: obedience without accountability creates conditions where harm is normalized and resistance is delayed until damage is widespread.

The core conflict is not morality versus survival. It is short-term compliance versus durable collective future.

The path forward is shared accountability: refuse participation in avoidable harm, organize alternatives, and place generational well-being above institutional obedience.
