The United States Is a Playing Field for Psychopaths - and They're Not Even Hiding It Anymore

Vincent Cordova argues that data centers, prison labor, extractive pricing, and surveillance infrastructure are all part of the same architecture of corporate control built to manage human beings as inventory.

The data centers are the nervous system of control, your life is the crop illustration

I have been listening to people go to town halls, night after night, standing up and saying no to data centers. Not because they do not understand technology or progress, but because they can feel the weight of something massive and inhuman pressing down on their communities. They show up with hoarse voices and homemade signs, begging local officials not to turn their last acres of farmland into windowless concrete tombs full of humming servers, sucking up water and electricity while spitting out heat and silence. And every single time, I watch the same choreography play out: the developers promise jobs that never materialize, the consultants smile through lies about minimal impact, and the politicians nod along before approving it anyway. Because the decision was made long before the first citizen stepped up to the microphone. The data centers are coming. They are not asking.

And when you sit with that reality long enough, when you let yourself stop pretending that this is just about zoning or power grids, you start seeing the whole design. The United States is not a democracy in any meaningful sense anymore. It is a playing field. Carefully manicured, heavily guarded, and engineered entirely for the enjoyment and enrichment of psychopaths - the kind of people who can look at human suffering and see an arbitrage opportunity, who can watch a family choose between insulin and rent and call it market efficiency. The architecture of this place, from the foundation up, was built to manage the population for the purpose of corporate capture. And if you zoom out far enough, the blueprint becomes unmistakable.

Go back to the beginning. This country's original systems were not designed by well-meaning philosophers who just happened to own people; they were designed by slaveholders, for the preservation of a slave-based economy. The same minds that codified human beings as three-fifths of a person for the census also constructed the institutional skeleton we are still rattling around in. The Senate? A tool to give outsized power to a minority of land-owning elites. The Electoral College? A firewall against the unwashed masses actually deciding anything. The whole apparatus was meant to manage destruction - to allow the looting of land, the extraction of labor, and the annihilation of indigenous life while maintaining a polite legal facade. That DNA never left. It just evolved. Now it wears a suit and talks about stakeholder value while doing the same thing: managing the destruction of human beings so that a tiny class of owners can keep extracting.

You can see it in healthcare. We have a system that will literally let you die rather than cut into a profit margin. Not struggle to afford treatment - die. Denied care, dropped from coverage, priced out of breathing. And when you point to the 771,000 people sleeping on the streets, when you scream that this is the richest nation in the history of the planet and we cannot house our own, you are brushed aside by the management company known as the federal government. Not their problem. They will give you a hearing, maybe a sympathetic head tilt from some congressperson who has been in office since the Cretaceous period, and then they will go back to ensuring the donor class gets its return on investment. You are a cost center, not a constituent. The whole system is optimized to shed you the moment you stop being profitable.

Two factors could make the single biggest difference in people's lives: control the cost of living and raise wages to match a life - not a subsistence bargain where you work two jobs just to keep the electricity on. That is it. That is the formula. A wage that lets you exist without constant terror, and a price tag on existing that does not eat you alive. But what does the management company do when people start demanding exactly that? It raises their electricity bill. Literally. Utilities get rubber-stamped rate hikes while wages stagnate, and the same government that tells you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps is out here handing your money to monopoly utility companies that also happen to be major campaign donors. The more you scream, the harder they step on your neck. The message is clear: work harder, or you will join the underclass that used to be called slaves and is now called the economically inactive or the unhoused or whatever clinical term lets them sleep at night.

This is a playing field for psychopaths. And the truly diabolical part is that the system is designed to make you sick in order to sell you the cure. They create the conditions - poverty, precarity, isolation, hopelessness - that force millions into clinical depression and anxiety, then the same corporate structures that caused the crisis sell you the prescription drugs to manage it. You are made unwell by a world that strips you of meaning, community, and rest, and then you are handed a product that keeps you just functional enough to continue generating revenue. And if you dare to notice, if you point out that the management company is imposing tariffs that will crush your budget, raising gas prices while ignoring your suffering, they will fund people to manipulate the narrative. They will parade out smiling, well-dressed spokespeople on television to say, Well, not all of us are struggling, knowing full well those people are paid actors, focus-grouped puppets reading lines crafted to gaslight an entire population into doubting their own lived experience. They weaponize your neighbor's voice to tell you your pain is not real, that it is just you, that the system works fine for normal people. It is psychological warfare.

They tell you to your face that they want you to get rich off the American people. But you cannot. That promise was never meant for you. Who are they talking about? Themselves. Their investment portfolios that swell when they strangle the American people with higher prices, lower wages, and regressive taxes. They brag about it now. They do not even pretend anymore. The cruelty is the point, and the profit is the prize.

Zoom out again, because the scale of it will steal your breath if you let it. There are nearly two million people in prison in this country, and you have to ask yourself why. Is it because we are uniquely evil? No. It is because we turned incarceration into a business model. Massive corporations run prison labor programs, paying pennies an hour or nothing at all, then selling the products to major brands. Private prison companies offer investment opportunities that let Wall Street literally fund their retirement accounts on the backs of caged human beings. Slavery never ended; it just put on an orange jumpsuit and started being traded on the stock exchange. And while you are digesting that, zoom out to the 31,000 kids being lined up right now to become the next generation of low-wage workers. States are gutting child labor laws, rolling back protections, waiving the requirement for work permits, because the psychopaths running the machine realized they are running out of cheap, compliant bodies. So they are harvesting the young, dressing it up as workforce development, and ensuring the conveyor belt never stops.

They prop up a president - any president - as the face of the whole circus, while the real power never changes hands. The same twelve institutions, the same permanent Congress members who have been there for decades, all of them united in their love of war crimes and looting the treasury. Both parties play their roles, shouting at each other over culture-war distractions, making sure you only see the figurehead while they are behind the curtain stuffing billions into the defense industry, deregulating the predators, and opening veins for capital. They need you fixated on the puppet so you never notice the hands. And the hands are the hedge funds, the private equity firms, the institutional holders who have hollowed out every big brand you used to trust. The cereal you ate as a kid, the department store you shopped at, the hospital you were born in - all gutted, loaded with debt, stripped for parts by sociopaths who never touched the product, never employed anyone, never built anything. They just run the algorithm that extracts maximum value while leaving a corpse behind. And then they have the audacity to cry poverty, to claim austerity is necessary, while they are sending your money - your tax subsidies, your bailout dollars - straight out of the country, into offshore accounts and share buybacks.

The data centers are not a local issue. They are the terminal stage of this whole diseased logic. They are going to be built whether you say no or not, because this playing field was never intended to accommodate your consent. Your no is a sound effect in a simulation. The land will be taken. The aquifer will be drained. Your electricity will become more expensive and less reliable so that the cloud can exist - the cloud that is not some ethereal dream, but a planetary-scale infrastructure of control. These data centers are the nervous system of a surveillance economy that will eventually monitor and manage every aspect of your life. And the endgame is not just targeted ads. The endgame is total behavioral control, where your car, your home, your devices, your very life functions are managed by algorithms that can turn things on and off at will. Imagine a world where your child is trapped in a vehicle that will not start because a data center somewhere determined their social credit score, or their parents' debt, or their neighborhood's risk profile. That is not science fiction. It is the logical conclusion of a system built by people who see you as inventory.

If you do not elect people who understand the real-world effect of the policies these psychopaths impose, you are handing them the keys to your children's entire existence. Not just their economic future - their autonomy. You will raise kids who have never known a world where their movement was not tracked, where their access was not gated, where their opportunities were not pre-sorted by a machine learning model trained on centuries of inequality. And the people making those decisions will not be public servants; they will be the same class of institutional investors and PE vampires who currently run everything else into the ground, only now they will not even need a physical army to enforce their will. They will just toggle a setting.

This is the playing field. The rules were written by grave robbers and slaveholders, updated by monopolists and war criminals, and now they are being administered by a management company that views you as livestock. The data centers are the new plantation, and your life is the crop. They are telling you, with every ignored town hall, every bulldozed home, every denied claim, every bought politician, every fake not all of us PR script: we can, so we will. The only question left is whether you will keep screaming at the stage while the blade descends, or whether you will finally stop playing their game entirely and start tearing up the field.
